WASHINGTON — The United States has implemented its highest average tariff rates since the 1930s, with the current effective tariff rate on imports estimated at 17.9% as of September 2025. This marks a significant increase from approximately 2.5% at the start of the year and surpasses the peak levels observed during the Great Depression era.
The surge in tariffs is attributed to a series of aggressive trade policies enacted by the Trump administration, including a 50% tariff on imports from India and a 25% tariff on imported cars from most countries. Additionally, President Trump announced a new 100% tariff on Chinese imports, effective November 1, 2025, in response to China’s export restrictions on rare earth minerals.
These measures have led to a significant increase in U.S. tariff revenues, which now exceed $30 billion per month, compared to under $10 billion per month in 2024. However, economists warn that the elevated tariffs may contribute to inflationary pressures, with projections indicating a potential rise in inflation to 3%, surpassing the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.
In response to the escalating trade barriers, global trade flows are shifting as countries seek alternative markets to mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs. The World Trade Organization has also warned that the global goods trade will experience a significant slowdown in 2026 due to the heightened tariffs.
As the U.S. approaches the highest tariff levels in nearly a century, the long-term effects on both domestic consumers and the global economy remain uncertain.
