In a quiet but major change in policy, the U.S. administration has “lifted a key restriction” that previously barred Ukraine from using Western long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia. According to The Wall Street Journal, this opens the door for Kyiv to employ British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles in Russia—missiles that rely on U.S. targeting data and have a range of more than 180 miles.

The shift also involves a change in who approves these strikes: the authority has now moved from Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Defense Secretary, to Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, head of U.S. European Command and NATO operations.

Ukraine’s own armed forces announced they used a Storm Shadow missile to hit a munitions plant in Bryansk, describing it as a “successful hit” that penetrated Russian air defences.

In everyday terms: Washington is essentially saying, “Okay, you’re cleared to go deeper now,” while still signalling there will be oversight. What remains to be seen is how Moscow will respond, and how this affects both Ukraine’s military strategy and the broader diplomatic push for peace.
