On Tuesday, President Donald Trump erupted at ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Mary Bruce during a meeting in the Oval Office with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Bruce asked Trump about his family’s business dealings in Saudi Arabia and pressed the crown prince on U.S. intelligence findings linking him to the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Trump responded by calling ABC “fake news,” deeming Bruce a “terrible reporter” and suggesting ABC’s broadcasting licence should be revoked. He then turned to the question of the files from the late Jeffrey Epstein, labelling him a “sick pervert” and claiming he had thrown Epstein out of his club years ago.
Inside the Oval Office, Trump told Bruce: “It’s not the question I mind. It’s your attitude… I think you are a terrible reporter.” He said ABC’s news was so skewed that “the licence should be taken away” and pointed to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr as someone who “should look at that.”
The confrontation underscored what many observers are calling an intensifying pattern of hostile exchanges between Trump and the press. Critics say the remarks raise serious questions about press freedom and executive pressure on media outlets. ABC News offered no comment at the time.
