Tropical Storm Melissa Forms in the Caribbean

The wave we’ve been watching in the Caribbean is now Tropical Storm Melissa.  It’s forecast to hang around in the central Caribbean for the next few days, and there is a hurricane watch for southern Haiti and a tropical storm watch for Jamaica.

At 11 am Tuesday, TS Melissa was about 300 miles south of Port au Prince, Haiti.  Maximum sustained winds were 50 miles per hour, and Melissa was moving west at 14 miles per hour.  Melissa is forecast to reach hurricane strength by the weekend.

Computer models are not yet in agreement regarding TS Melissa’s track beyond the weekend.  We’ll need to watch Melissa closely.
