Washington — With the 2025 Thanksgiving holiday travel surge looming, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is issuing a dual message: prepare for possible disruptions, and travel with courtesy. According to Duffy and officials at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), staffing shortages and a protracted federal government shutdown have placed significant pressure on air travel.
The Department of Transportation has highlighted a sharp rise in unruly passenger incidents: approximately a 400 % increase in in‑flight outbursts since 2019. In response, Duffy launched a public‑awareness campaign titled “The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You,” urging flyers to dress respectfully, offer help, and observe basic courtesy as airports reach peak volumes.
On the logistical front, the FAA has initiated capacity reductions at major U.S. airports — beginning with a 4 % cut in flight volume, potentially rising to 10 % or more if the shutdown continues. Duffy warned that if the situation persists, air travel during the holiday period could “slow to a trickle,” leaving a substantial number of Americans unable to reach their destinations.
Duffy added that even as safety remains the top priority, the system is stretched. He asked travellers to have backup plans, check flight status regularly, and consider travel off‑peak when possible. Meanwhile, airlines and airports are working overtime to mitigate delays, cancellations, and staffing gaps.
As the season unfolds, Duffy’s message is clear: the holidays are likely to bring historic travel volumes and heightened risk of disruption — but with proper planning and mutual respect among travelers, the journey can still be smoother for all.
