The Don CeSar Hotel – Pink Palace Since 1928

This picture of the Don CeSar was before the hurricane in 2024. Today there are a few scaffolds and an addition going on, but the Don CeSar is open in all its previous glory!

Opened in 1928, this iconic beachfront hotel is famous for its striking pink facade, grand architecture, and rich history, making it one of the most recognizable landmarks along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The History of The Don CeSar in St. Pete Beach

It was built in 1928 by Thomas Rowe, who envisioned a luxurious resort modeled after a Mediterranean palace. Named after the hero in his favorite opera, “Maritana,” the Don CeSar quickly became a glamorous retreat for the elite, attracting celebrities, politicians, and wealthy socialites.

Its distinctive pink facade, opulent architecture, and beachfront location made it an icon of 1920s luxury and a symbol of Florida’s boom era.

Faith Based Events

During the Great Depression, the Don CeSar struggled financially and was eventually taken over by the U.S. government during World War II, serving as a military hospital and later as a veterans’ convalescent center.

After the war, the hotel fell into disrepair and was nearly demolished. However, in the early 1970s, a group of preservationists rallied to save the historic structure.

The Don CeSar was restored to its former grandeur and reopened as a luxury hotel in 1973, later earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, it stands as a premier Gulf Coast resort, combining old-world charm with modern luxury while maintaining its iconic pink exterior and historic ambiance.
