More than 100 people have been confirmed dead in severe flooding in Central Texas as emergency workers continued to look for dozens who remained missing. In Kerr County, Camp Mystic said it was grieving the loss of 27 campers and counselors. Ten girls and one counselor were still unaccounted for on Monday, the fourth day of the search.

Residents sort through mountains of flood-soaked belongings

KERRVILLE, Texas — On a quiet street known as Loop 13, residents were busy tearing out drywall, tossing their soggy possessions into black trash bags and trying to figure out what comes next.

Mountains of flood-soaked items lined the street. Refrigerators and sofas, mattresses and golf clubs. Televisions and microwaves. Clothes and Christmas decorations. At least one house had orange spray paint on the door, the mark of first responders who had come searching for the living and the dead.

INGRAM, Texas — Three days after his family’s life was turned upside down, Spencer Offenbacker was back at what remained of their home near the Guadalupe River, wondering what could be salvaged and what starting over would even look like.
