In the tropics, Tropical Depression # 9 is on the verge of becoming Tropical Storm Imelda, and it’s been bringing heavy rain to eastern Cuba and portions of the Bahamas.  Early Saturday evening, TD # 9 was about 105 miles south-southwest of the central Bahamas and was moving northwest at 5 miles per hour.  Maximum sustained winds were 35 miles per hour at that time.  A tropical storm warning is in effect for the central Bahamas and portions of the northwestern Bahamas, including Nassau.  There is a tropical storm watch north of our area, stretching from the Palm Beach/Martin county line to the Flagler/Volusia county line.  As TD # 9 (or Imelda) makes its closest approach to South Florida on Sunday, we can expect periods of gusty winds in the east coast metro area and the Upper Keys, along with dangerous rip currents and rough seas on Sunday and early in the workweek.  This system is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane early on Tuesday.  Its track after that time is  uncertain and could result in the system meandering off the southeast U.S. coast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Humberto is a now a category 5 hurricane and could pose a threat to Bermuda.  Early Saturday evening, Humberto was about 685 miles south-southeast of Bermuda and was moving west-northwest at 10 miles per hour.  Maximum sustained winds were 160 miles per hour at that time. Much of the southeast U.S. coast can expect dangerous rip currents, beach erosion, and rough seas as a result of swells from Humberto.
