The U.S. federal government shutdown, now in its 11th day, is rapidly escalating into a full-blown operational crisis. What began as a funding deadlock has spun into sweeping layoffs, program cancellations, and service disruptions across multiple agencies.
Late Friday evening, the White House confirmed that “substantial” layoffs (called Reductions-in-Force or RIFs) have begun across key departments including Education, Treasury, Health and Human Services, and Commerce. Federal employee unions have cried foul, filing lawsuits to block terminations during a funding lapse.
At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dozens of scientists and “disease detectives” reportedly received RIF notices, including the entire Washington, D.C. office. Some divisions have since rescinded those notices, raising questions about internal priority shifts.
Meanwhile, flight cancellations and delays are multiplying as staffing gaps hit air traffic control and related safety services. Some grant programs and federal contracts have been temporarily suspended or canceled, especially in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
In a rare move, President Trump directed the Defense Department to use “all available funds” to ensure active-duty military personnel receive their October 15 pay, trying to shield troops from fallout. But few assurances exist for furloughed civilian staff — the administration recently signaled that back pay is not guaranteed, breaking with past practice.
With both sides dug in, Congress remains divided over reopening the government. Republicans refuse to include healthcare subsidy extensions in stopgap funding, while Democrats insist on them. Until a deal is struck, more services, jobs, and programs will continue to hang in the balance.
