Semaglutide’s Heart Benefits Go Beyond the Scale, New Study Finds

A new analysis shows that the heart-protecting benefits of Semaglutide extend even if the scale doesn’t budge. As reported in Gizmodo, researchers reviewing data from the large SELECT trial found that among people with obesity and cardiovascular disease, semaglutide reduced the risk of heart attacks and other major events — “even when people hadn’t lost much weight at all.”

The key takeaway? The cardiologist quoted said the findings “highlight that the cardioprotective effects of semaglutide may be independent of adiposity and weight loss.” While weight loss and waist-circumference reduction still helped (about a third of the benefit was tied to fat loss), the bulk of the heart-health benefit seemed to stem from mechanisms beyond shedding pounds.

For patients and clinicians, this could change how semaglutide and similar GLP-1 drugs are used. If heart protection doesn’t depend strictly on BMI or weight, then limiting access based on those metrics might need rethinking. One researcher told Gizmodo: “This is a potential guideline changer because of its robust effect here.”  As scientists dig deeper into how exactly these drugs shield the heart, “maybe we should be looking at the indication for these drugs beyond just whether your BMI is more than 27,” another expert noted.
