Melissa Intensifies, Future Coastal Storm To Team Up Along US East Coast Next Week

AccuWeather hurricane experts are forecasting an AccuWeather RealImpact™ scale rating of 5 for hurricanes in the western Caribbean due to torrential rainfall, destructive winds, likely resulting in historic and catastrophic impacts.

Tropical Storm Melissa is forecast to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane over the Caribbean Sea this weekend. The storm poses a historic threat to parts of Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The storm is expected to bring torrential rainfall and life-threatening, destructive winds, likely leading to catastrophic flooding into early next week.

Melissa set to intensify into a major hurricane: Currently, Melissa is producing sustained winds of 45mph but is forecast to strengthen significantly over very warm Caribbean waters, with sea surface temperatures in the upper 80s F this weekend. If the storm remains offshore long enough, Melissa could potentially reach Category 5 intensity, with sustained winds of 157 mph or greater on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
