President Donald Trump’s one-time national security adviser, John Bolton, was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Maryland on 18 counts alleging that he unlawfully transmitted and retained classified national defense information.
Prosecutors claim Bolton shared over 1,000 pages of “diary-like” notes with family members while serving in the Trump White House, using personal email and messaging accounts, some of which allegedly contained sensitive intelligence. They also accuse him of storing classified documents at his home in Bethesda and at his Washington office.
Bolton, 76, denies wrongdoing and says the charges represent political retaliation. His legal team asserts much of the material was unclassified or already known to investigators.
The Department of Justice detailed in a press release that eight of the counts relate to transmission of national defense information, while ten involve the unlawful retention of such information. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that “anyone who abuses a position of power and jeopardizes our national security will be held accountable.”
The high-stakes case places Bolton among the most prominent former administration figures to face federal criminal charges. Given the sensitivity of the materials involved, the case is expected to proceed slowly, with classified handling and national security rules complicating courtroom proceedings.
