JERUSALEM — Israel launched a series of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in response to what it claims was a violation of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire by Hamas. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the attacks were in retaliation for an assault by Hamas militants that resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers in Rafah.

The IDF targeted multiple Hamas positions, including tunnels and weapons depots. According to Gaza’s civil defense agency, the strikes killed at least 45 people, including children, and injured many others. The Israeli military confirmed that it had resumed enforcement of the ceasefire after the strikes, stating that it would continue to uphold the agreement and respond firmly to any future violations.

Hamas has denied any involvement in the Rafah attack, asserting that it remains committed to the ceasefire and accusing Israel of fabricating pretexts to justify military action. The group maintains that it has lost contact with its fighters in the region since March, due to Israeli control.

The renewed hostilities have raised concerns about the fragile nature of the ceasefire, which had been holding since October 10, 2025. The truce had led to the release of hostages and the resumption of humanitarian aid to Gaza. However, the latest escalation threatens to unravel these gains and prolong the suffering of civilians on both sides.
