Israel Intends To Take Over Gaza, Netanyahu Says Ahead Of Security Meeting

TEL AVIV — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that his government intends to take military control of the entire Gaza Strip, saying in an interview with Fox News that Israel doesn’t want to “govern” the Palestinian territory and hopes to eventually hand it over to “Arab forces” that won’t threaten Israeli communities.

He made the remarks ahead of a security cabinet meeting, now underway, in which government ministers will discuss proposals from the Israeli military to expand operations in the enclave. The military’s senior leadership, including chief of staff Eyal Zamir, oppose conquering and reoccupying Gaza, according to two former Israeli officials and a person familiar with the prime minister’s decisions. That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with the media.

Zamir and his commanders were expected to also lay out plans that include striking and besieging — but not entering — Gaza City, as well as the central area’s refugee camps, to pressure Hamas. In a statement Thursday, Zamir, who has clashed with Netanyahu this week, said that the military had already “met and even exceeded the operation’s objectives” in Gaza.
