
The House — which canceled votes this week to add pressure on Democrats to accept the GOP bill — plans to remain out of session next week as well, leaving no quick avenue for changing the existing proposal.
On Capitol Hill, preliminary talks continued around how to find a compromise that could break the deadlock. One possible option is a shorter funding extension through Oct. 31, which Democrats say could keep pressure on Republicans to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies — originally put in place during covid-19 — before the open enrollment period begins on Nov. 1.
