Recently The Food and Drug Administration declined to approve MDMA-assisted therapy for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. The F.D.A. says there was insufficient data to allow its use. If approved, MDMA would have become the first psychedelic compound to be regulated by federal health authorities.
The following is a statement from Susan Nyamora, MSW, CRPS-A, NCRPSS, President & CEO, South Florida Wellness Network (SFWN) and a Woman in Long-Term Recovery
“As someone who identifies in long-term recovery, I understand the complexities and challenges that come with the journey toward healing and wellness. The recent discussions around the potential medical use of MDMA (Ecstasy) bring to light the importance of approaching recovery with an open mind and a focus on harm reduction.
MDMA has shown promise in treating conditions like PTSD, which is a step forward for those who may not have found relief through traditional methods. However, it’s essential to recognize the risks associated with this substance, especially for those of us in recovery who have experienced the impact of substance use firsthand.
Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey. It’s a deeply personal process that requires respect for the multiple pathways available. For some, abstinence may be the key to maintaining their recovery, while others may benefit from different approaches, including the careful, professional use of substances like MDMA under the right circumstances.
As we navigate these discussions, it’s important to prioritize safety, individual choice, and the well-being of those in our communities. By embracing a harm reduction approach and acknowledging the diverse pathways to recovery, we can continue to support those on their journey to becoming their ultimate selves.”
