Erin Explodes To A Category 5 Hurricane

Erin continues to intensify, and it’s now a powerful and dangerous Category 5 hurricane.
Late Saturday morning, Hurricane Hunter aircraft reported maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour.  The minimum pressure was measured at 917 millibars — to put it in perspective, that’s a lower central pressure than that of Hurricane Andrew, when it made its devastating landfall in South Miami-Dade in 1992.
Hurricane Erin is moving west at 17 miles per hour, and its outer bands are affecting portions of the northern Leeward Islands.
