Boston Cream Pie Is Named “Pie” As Cakes And Pies Were Cooked In The Same Pans

National Boston Cream Pie Day arrives on October 23. If you’ve never heard of Boston cream pie before, it’s a yellow butter cake, filled with custard or cream and topped with chocolate glaze. Now, we know what you’re thinking: Why is it called a pie, when it’s actually a cake?

  • 1856 – French chef Sanzian invents the Boston cream pie for The Parker House Hotel (now the Omni Parker House Hotel) in Boston.
  • 1872 – The name “chocolate cream pie” first appeared in the 1872 Methodist Almanac.
  • 1878 – An early printed use of the term “Boston cream pie” occurred in the Granite Iron Ware Cook Book, printed in 1878.
  • 1879 – The cookbook, Housekeeping in Old Virginia, by Marion Cabell Tyree, has the recipe for Boston Cream Cakes.
  • 1887 – The earliest known recipe for the modern variant was printed in Miss Parloa’s Kitchen Companion in 1887 as “chocolate cream pie”.
  • 1996 – Massachusetts names the Boston cream pie as the official “state dessert.”  A civics class from Norton High School sponsored the bill. The pie beat out other candidates, including the toll-house cookie and Indian pudding.
  • 2003 – The Boston Cream Doughnut was designated the official doughnut of Massachusetts in 2003.
  • 2010 – The world’s largest Boston Cream Pie was created in 2010 by culinary students at Southern New Hampshire University. The pastry measured 10 ft wide and 1½ ft high and weighed over 1 ton.
  • 2015 – Author Robert Cox publishes the definitive history of New England pie making. Discover the “revolutionary” roots of the Boston cream pie.
  • Originally this American-French Chef called the cake the “Parker House Chocolate Cream Pie” and had taken the French Butter sponge cake and filled it with a delightful Crème pâtissière, an egg-thickened custard with a history going back at least as far as Ancient Rome, brushed it with rum syrup and topped with a chocolate fondant.
  • Although it is called a Boston cream pie, it is a cake and not a pie.
  • A Boston cream doughnut is a name for a Berliner filled with vanilla custard or crème pâtissière and topped with icing made from chocolate
  • The dessert acquired its name when cakes and pies were cooked in the same pans, and the words were used interchangeably.
  •  A direct descendant of earlier cakes known as American pudding-cake pie and Washington pie, the dessert was referred to as chocolate cream pie, Parker House chocolate cream pie, and finally Boston cream pie on Parker House’s menus.
