
Amazon is preparing to eliminate up to 30,000 corporate roles, representing nearly 10 % of its roughly 350,000 office-based employees. The cuts, which are expected to begin Tuesday, mark the company’s largest single round of layoffs since a 27,000-job reduction in late 2022.
The affected divisions span human resources (branded internally as “People Experience & Technology”), devices and services, operations, and other corporate functions. According to sources close to the matter, managers were briefed on Monday and have been trained to notify affected teams as early as Tuesday via email.
Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy has cited rising automation via artificial-intelligence tools and a desire to cut bureaucratic layers as key drivers. The company’s cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services, saw a year-over-year sales increase of 17.5 % in Q2, notably slower than rivals. The reduction targets thousands of roles even as Amazon plans to hire another 250,000 seasonal workers ahead of the holiday season.
While Amazon declined to comment directly on the layoff numbers, the move sends a strong signal that high-growth tech companies are shifting gears from expansion to optimization. As millions of workers brace for uncertain months ahead, the broader tech-industry labour market may feel ripple effects.
