Why Packing Light Just Got Pricier as JetBlue Hikes Checked Bag Fees

Packing a suitcase for your next flight just got a lot more expensive. JetBlue Airways recently announced another significant increase to its checked baggage fees. As Quartz reports, “JetBlue is raising checked bag fees again — to as much as $70 for a first bag.” These new rates apply to all tickets booked on or after November 3. Travelers who purchased flights before that date will still pay the previous rates.

How much you pay now depends heavily on when you fly and when you pay. According to Quartz, “During peak periods such as the holidays and summer, the fee is $55 in advance.” That advance price jumps from the previous rate of $49. Waiting until the last minute will cost you even more at the airport. If you pay within 24 hours of departure on peak dates, the first bag costs $70. Off-peak economy flyers will pay $50 in advance or $60 within the 24-hour window.

Extra luggage or overseas travel will also take a bigger bite out of your wallet. A second checked bag now costs $70 during off-peak times and $75 during peak periods when paid early. As Quartz notes, “a third bag costs $200 regardless of travel dates.” International travelers face steep hikes as well. For basic economy flyers heading to Europe, the first bag fee jumped from $60 to $80 each way.

The airline points to soaring energy expenses as the primary driver behind these steeper prices. In a statement quoted by Quartz, JetBlue explained, “We’re adjusting checked bag fees to help offset rising fuel and operating costs.” The carrier added that this strategy keeps base fares competitive for travelers who only bring carry-on bags. Quartz further pointed out that “The cost of jet fuel has approximately doubled this year, ever since the war in Iran began in February.” Gulf Coast jet fuel recently hit $4.44 per gallon, pressuring airlines to find extra revenue.

Fortunately, a few savvy travelers can still dodge these painful new baggage surcharges altogether. As Quartz highlights, “Customers who carry JetBlue’s co-branded credit card or have elite frequent flyer status are exempt from the fees.” Passengers booking premium Mint or BlueFirst fares also receive at least one free checked bag. When JetBlue first raised bag fees in late March, rival U.S. airlines quickly matched the move. Flyers should watch closely to see if other carriers follow suit once again.
