For years, wellness-minded shoppers have moderated their alcohol intake in pursuit of better health. Now, the beverage industry is witnessing a parallel shift during waking hours as consumers reevaluate their relationship with caffeine. According to a recent report by Food Dive, shoppers are increasingly gravitating toward decaffeinated coffee and functional energy drinks formulated to deliver focus without the jitters.

As Food Dive noted, “Beverages touting lower or no caffeine are becoming mainstream as experts say consumers are rethinking the ‘daytime vice.‘” This movement is closely tied to the rise of wearable sleep trackers and a broader cultural shift toward mindful label reading. Speaking to Food Dive, Scott Dicker, senior director and head of market research at Spins, explained the inevitability of the trend: “People have been cutting back on alcohol for years now. I always figured caffeine would be next. Alcohol is the nighttime vice, and caffeine [is] the daytime one.”

Rather than abandoning their favorite beverage rituals altogether, shoppers are propelling decaf into a major growth segment. Citing Spins market data, Food Dive reported that “sales for decaf beans and grounds rose 5.3% over the past year, and ready-to-drink decaf coffee sales grew 25.7% during the same time period.” Startups are moving quickly to capture this demand. Adriana Gindlesperger, co-founder of unsweetened cold brew brand Lowkey Coffee, told Food Dive that decaf is frequently treated as an “afterthought” by legacy roasters, adding, “Decaf’s been, no pun intended, a sleepy corner of the category. Now it’s really starting to stand up as its own growth category and opportunity.”

Beyond coffee, beverage formulators are rethinking how energy is delivered. Food Dive highlighted that “functional beverages that offer different sources of caffeine, such as paraxanthine and L-theanine, provide even more options for consumers to get a boost without jitters.” Major brands like Pure Leaf and Folgers have introduced L-theanine—an amino acid in tea leaves that regulates mood and focus—while better-for-you energy brand Update utilizes paraxanthine, a natural caffeine metabolite that clears the body faster and prevents crashes.

Daniel Solomons, co-founder of Update, told Food Dive that consumers often feel guilty about their reliance on traditional stimulants: “People know they may be consuming more than they want to, or they’re actively trying to cut back, but they still need the utility that energy provides.” While traditional caffeine giants still dominate overall volume, lower-caffeine innovations are carving out a permanent space on retail shelves.
