Gulf Tropical Disturbance Threatens Heavy Soaking Rain And Flooding Across Northern Shores

An area of high-risk tropical development is unlikely to strengthen into a hurricane, but AccuWeather experts say this development zone is expected to bring heavy soaking rain across the U.S. Gulf region and Mexico.

“We currently believe there is a 15 percent chance that this area develops into a hurricane. The waters in the Gulf are certainly very warm, which can support rapid intensification,” said AccuWeather Lead Hurricane expert Alex DaSilva. “However, the wind shear over much of the Gulf is likely to limit how quickly this area can organize and intensify. The most likely intensity is either a tropical depression or a tropical storm.”

AccuWeather believes the most likely area of impact will include the Northern Gulf, across New Orleans and the Florida panhandle where 4-8 inches of rain could fall.

Impacts in Mexico could begin as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday, with U.S. impacts as early as Friday. AccuWeather experts believe there are several different scenarios that could play out as the storm organizes.

Faith Based Events
  • A quickly moving storm could track between eastern Texas and Florida panhandle.
  • A slow moving storm would move farther west inland towards Texas Coast.
  • If the dip in jet stream across the Southern Plains doesn’t interact strongly with the system, it could cause the storm to meander before moving westward into Mexico or far south Texas.

Regardless of which track the storm takes, a surge of tropical moisture is forecast to spread northward into much of the U.S. Gulf Coast, which can lead to heavy rain and increased flooding risks later this week into the weekend.
