As powerful Hurricane Dorian batters the northwestern Bahamas late Sunday afternoon, there’s an important change in watches and warnings in Florida.
A hurricane warning is now in effect from Jupiter Inlet north to the Volusia/Brevard county line. A storm surge warning is also in effect from Lantana to the Volusia/Brevard county line. Hurricane force winds and life-threatening storm surge can be expected in those areas. A hurricane watch is now in effect for just north of Deerfield Beach to Jupiter Inlet. Hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area.
At 5 pm Sunday, Dorian was located near 26.6 North, 77.3 West, about 95 miles east of Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. Maximum sustained winds were 185 miles per hour. Dorian is moving west at 5 miles per hour.
We’re watching for Dorian to slow down and make a northward turn late on Monday into Tuesday.
South Florida is already getting some showers associated with Dorian’s outer bands. Tropical storm force winds are expected to arrive early Monday morning.
