Birthday celebrations are supposed to be filled with laughter, merriment, and mirth. Sure, when we’re younger, the merriment is age appropriate and a little less raucous than it might be in our 20s. Some 71% to 73% of Millennials drink, and they could surely tell you that some healthy imbibement pairs perfectly with the celebration of another year on our planet. Another thing that’s ubiquitous with birthday celebrations is cake.
Some cakes are beautifully crafted, pieces of confectionery magnificence. Others find their way to the Cake Disasters! Pinterest board. One Georgia 25-year-old has the most recent submission to that beautifully disastrous collection of cake creativity mishaps.
For her birthday, Kensli Davis told her mother that she wanted a birthday cake decorated with her favorite Disney princess Moana. Not at all an outlandish request, but when Davis’ mother contacted the cake decorator, there was a complete lapse in understanding. Rather than receiving a Moana themed cake, the birthday girl received a marijuana themed cake.
Complete with a pot leaf and a green cartoon My Little Pony smoking a joint with a pot leaf tattoo, it was very apparent that there had been a miscommunication.
“I think they thought that she said ‘marijuana’ because we are from south Georgia and kind of have an accent. So, ‘Moana,’ marijuana? I guess when they said that I love cartoons, they were just like, ‘Let’s throw a little pony on there.’ It had red eyes. It was smoking a joint with a tramp stamp of a pot leaf on its bottom,” said Davis.
This would’ve — and has — upset plenty of people in the past. More than 80% of Americans report experiencing daily stress and birthdays are one of the few days people really want to be stress-free. Since the cake was for a 25th birthday rather than, say, a 5th birthday, the Davis family found the mixup hilarious. The family is from the southernmost part of Georgia and suspects that their accents might’ve added to the mixup, even though they’d been ordering cakes from the same place for over 10 years.
“We weren’t mad about it or anything. We thought it was funny so we just ate it anyway!” Davis said.
She reported it being a delicious ice cream cake, despite not being themed after Moana. And with June being the month the most ice cream is produced, what a perfect way to kick off July. After posting the sugary snafu on social media, it quickly gained traction and went viral, gathering more than 11,000 shares on Facebook. The person who made the cake called to apologize for the confusion and offered a new cake, but Davis declined and they enjoyed the cake anyway. If it caused anything, it was some extra smiles and laughter. More than half of adults say a healthy smile is our most attractive feature as we age and this birthday cake certainly did the trick. That’s what birthdays are all about.
Tomayto-tomahto? Not this time. Moana-marijuana.
