* The FDA has designated a recall of coffee pods as class II.
* The pods, labeled on the outside as Gimme! Decaf de Agua Coffee Pods, actually contain caffeine.
* Consuming caffeine may pose a health concern for some people.

More than 250 boxes of coffee pods have been recalled and given a consumer risk level, the Food and Drug Administration announced last week.1 The product, Gimme! Decaf de Agua Coffee Pods, was voluntarily recalled by New York–based Gimme Coffee, Inc. in late October due to a labeling error—the pods actually contain caffeine.2 On Dec. 11, the FDA designated the recall as class II, the second-highest risk level for possible adverse effects.

Which Coffee Pods Were Recalled?

The recalled boxes contain 10 pods each. While the outer packaging is labeled “Gimme! Decaf de Agua Coffee Pods,” the pods inside say “Gimme! coffee Deep Disco caffeinated coffee pods.”

You can recognize the recalled product by the following identifiers:

What You Should Do

The company said the product is safe to drink but, unlike the label suggests, actually contains caffeine, which could pose a risk for some people. A Gimme! Coffee employee discovered the labeling mix-up, and as of Oct. 24, the company had not received any complaints from customers.

A class II designation means the affected product could “cause temporarily or medically reversible adverse health consequences” or that “the probability of serious health consequences is remote,” according to the FDA.

The agency notes that 400 milligrams of caffeine a day—about two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee—isn’t usually associated with negative effects, though sensitivity can vary among individuals.

Gimme! Coffee advises anyone who has the recalled product to contact the company for a return or replacement, or to return it to the place of purchase. For questions, you can call (607) 273-0111 or email orders@gimmecoffee.com.
