Category 3 Melissa Makes Landfall in Cuba

Hurricane Melissa came ashore in eastern Cuba early Wednesday morning as a dangerous category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour.

The center of the hurricane made landfall about 20 miles east of Chivirico in the province of Santiago de Cuba shortly after 3 am on Wednesday.  That location is about 60 miles west-southwest of Guantanamo.

Melissa was moving northeast at 10 miles per hour at landfall.  Passage over the mountainous terrain of eastern Cuba is expected to weaken Melissa before it moves into the southeastern Bahamas later on Wednesday.

There is a hurricane warning for the central and southeastern Bahamas and a hurricane watch for Bermuda, which is expected to be upgraded to a hurricane warning later today.  Melissa is forecast to move over or near Bermuda late Thursday into Friday.
