Tropical Storm Cindy formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday. It is bringing heavy rain and a threat of tornadoes to the northern Gulf coast well in advance of landfall late on Wednesday or early Thursday. At 5 am Wednesday, Cindy was located near 27.3 North, 91.9 West, about 225 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas. Maximum sustained winds were 60 miles per hour, and Cindy was moving northwest at 8 miles per hour. Cindy is a ragged system with much of the severe weather well to the east of the center. Effects from Cindy will be strongest from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle.
Elsewhere in the tropics, Bret has weakened into a remnant and a rainmaker in the Caribbean.
