No Badminton Gear So Family Uses Other Items Creating Pickleball

National Pickleball Day is on August 8, and we are here to show you can celebrate the day in a fun-filled way. Do you know that it has been 59 years since Pickleball was invented? The game combines traditional lawn tennis, ping-pong, a.k.a. table tennis, and badminton.

The game is played with ping-pong rackets on a badminton court with a tennis net. Similar to tennis, but less challenging, it’s suitable for people of all ages. National Pickleball Day was created by pickleball instructor Deirdre Morris in 2021 to encourage people to learn to play pickleball.

• 1965 – Pickleball is played for the first time by a group of families who didn’t have a proper badminton set-up.
• 1967 – Construction of the first-ever pickleball court.
• 1972 – Barney McCallum establishes Pickleball, Inc. which sells wooden pickleball paddles.
• 1975 – The National Observer brings pickleball into the national spotlight
• 1976 – Tennis Magazine introduces pickleball as “America’s newest racquet sport.”
• 1976 – Inaugural pickleball tournament held in Tukwila, Washington.

• 1984 –  Arlen Paranto designs the first composite pickleball paddle.
• 1984 – The United States Amateur Pickleball Association publishes the first pickleball rulebook.
• 2008 – USA Pickleball Association published the first Official Tournament Rulebook
• 2009 – The inaugural USAPA National Tournament in Buckeye, Arizona, sees participation from nearly 400 players across 26 U.S. states and Canada

• 2021 – National Pickleball Day is created by Deirdre Morris to help the sport of pickleball grow
• 2021 – Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships had over 2,342 participants, a record number for the tournament.
• 2022 – Pickleball is declared the official state sport of Washington.
• 2022 – Pickleball makes its debut on a major broadcast network, CBS.
• 2023 – there were over 4.8 million pickleball players in the United States, a growth of over 39.3% from 2020 according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA).
• Poacher – A player is called a poacher if they decide to cross the center line and enter their partner’s area of the court. This is usually done during a rally to surprise the opponent and to play offense.
• The serve in a pickleball game is done underarm and to the service court area of the opponent.
• The player or team to get 11 points first with a two-point lead, wins the game.
• Pickleball players and fans are called “Picklers.”
• Losers in Pickleball are known as being “Pickled.”
• Some people eat mustard before playing Pickleball to avoid getting leg cramps.
• The non-volley zone in front of the Pickleball net is called the “Kitchen.”
• A “dink shot” is the result of the ball landing in the Kitchen.
• The name was suggested by Joel Pritchard’s wife, inspired by the ‘pickle boat’ in rowing. ss drew at random from available rowers
