NEW YORK, N.Y. – The final chapter of an improbable, historic season was written on Saturday night as Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza was named the winner of the 2025 Heisman Memorial Trophy. Mendoza becomes the first player in Indiana Hoosiers football history to claim college football’s most prestigious individual award, capping off a perfect 13-0 season and the program’s first Big Ten Championship since 1967.

Mendoza, a redshirt junior who transferred from California, received a commanding majority of the votes, finishing with 2,362 total points, including 643 first-place votes. He decisively beat out Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia (1,435 points), Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (719 points), and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin (432 points). The voting results underscore the national recognition of Mendoza’s season, as he finished first in all six Heisman regions, a feat not accomplished since 2022.

The 6-foot-5 Miami native was the indispensable catalyst for a Hoosiers offense that broke program records for touchdowns and points scored. Mendoza finished the regular season leading the nation with 33 touchdown passes, to go along with 2,980 passing yards and a stellar 71.5% completion rate. He also contributed six rushing touchdowns, often making the difference in critical moments, such as his clutch play against Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game.

Mendoza’s journey from a lightly-recruited prospect who was once committed to Yale, to Heisman winner, is a testament to perseverance and the power of the transfer portal. He is the seventh transfer player to win the award in the last nine years. In his emotional acceptance speech, he credited his teammates, his family (particularly his grandparents who emigrated from Cuba), and the coaching staff for his success. He also acknowledged the significance of his Cuban heritage, becoming just the second Heisman winner of Hispanic descent.

Faith Based Events

“This is our trophy,” Mendoza proclaimed, his voice filled with emotion, to his cheering teammates. “It belongs to all of you, it belongs, for the first time, in Bloomington.” The win marks a new era for Indiana football, which secured the No. 1 overall seed in the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket. The Hoosiers will now play a quarterfinal game in the Rose Bowl on January 1. Mendoza’s Heisman victory, following a year of unprecedented team success and individual accolades like the Maxwell and Davey O’Brien awards, solidifies his place as the defining figure of the 2025 college football season.
