Watch Baby Penguin Get First Swimming Lesson

Keepers at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in the U.K. are teaching a baby penguin to swim for the first time after neglectful parents shirk duties. Buzz60’s Tony Spitz has the details.

Little chick Squidge, a Humboldt Penguin, took his first proper dip in a pool this week under the watchful eye of keepers – because mum and dad were too busy rowing to teach him how to swim.

Squidge became the first ever penguin chick born at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary when it hatched at the end of May.

The fluffy little bird was born to Lola and Gilbert, who have been ‘married’ since 2013.

But unfortunately, Gilbert and Lola were going through a bit of a rough patch when Squidge hatched, because the pair couldn’t stop arguing.

Humboldt Penguins mate for life, but that does not mean they don’t have disagreements from time to time, and sadly for Squidge, mum and dad were too busy arguing about who ate what fish to care for their chick.

The pair struggled to incubate Squidge properly, and had been ignoring their first chick.

Keepers at the sanctuary stepped in to hand-rear Squidge and now, just two months later, decided the time was right for the baby penguin to take to the water and start swimming lessons.
