Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday Begins Friday

By Terri Lynn, SouthFloridaReporter.com, Managing Editor, Aug 5, 2015 – One of the most popular times of year for shopping in Florida is the first week of August. That’s when the highly anticipated 10-day sales tax holiday begins,  offering shoppers a substantial savings on clothing and back to school merchandise.

This year, Florida’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m., Friday, August 7, 2015, and end at 11:59 p.m., Sunday, August 16, 2015.

During this period, no Florida sales tax will be collected on sales of clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $100 or less per item or certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item.

The sales tax moratorium also applies on the first $750 of the sales price for computers and certain computer-related accessories when purchased for non-commercial home or personal use.

While the sales tax holiday is initially intended for back-to-school shoppers, the list of merchandise that is eligible for the sales tax exemption includes many items that do not directly apply to students. This includes clothing and accessories for everyone in the house.

Retailers, big and small, regard the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday as boost to business since it encourages shopping and offers consumers savings on popular items.
