Heather Oglesby is on a mission! The popular home organizing and decluttering expert wants to help people eliminate clutter and get rid of unwanted stuff.
“It just doesn’t happen overnight. People start acquiring things bit by bit and eventually run out of room in their house or apartment. In many cases, people take the easy way out and rent local storage space,” Oglesby says.
The thriving self-storage industry is created by lifestyle transitions, such as marriage, divorce, retirement and moving. “Self-storage is not a solution. It’s just a band-aid,” says Oglesby, the founder of A Place for Everything, created especially to help people clean out and organize their kitchens, bathrooms, closets, desks and garages.
According to a recent study:
- One in ten U.S. households now rents a self-storage unit that typically costs $100 a month.
- Collier County has approximately 9.02 square feet of storage space per person. (This exceeds the national average by more than 30%)
All of this makes Oglesby cringe. “Can you imagine what you can do with an extra $100 a month?”
Oglesby started her business one year ago. “You should always be purging and controlling the urge to buy more and more,” Oglesby explains.
“Most people are overwhelmed and don’t know where to begin. That’s where I come in.”
According to Oglesby:
- 80% of our things are rarely used.
- Everything in your house needs to have a place.
- Don’t buy more than you can store.
Some de-cluttering projects take a few hours. Others, like the garage, can take an entire day. Once the project is completed, her client feels a sense of freedom and accomplishment
“The best thing a client can say to me is, why didn’t I do this sooner.”
