Some late-week showers and storms are the weather story in South Florida on Friday as we go into the weekend. After some early Keys and east coast showers, Friday features some sun and more showers and storms forming from mid-day through the afternoon. Red tide continues to be a problem at Gulf coast beaches at least through today. Highs on Friday will be near 90 degrees at the coasts and the low 90s well inland.
Saturday will bring widespread showers and storms throughout the area, especially in the afternoon. Saturday’s highs will be near 90 degrees.
Sunday will see a return to a more typical rainy season pattern, with some early east coast showers, morning sun and clouds, and sea breeze showers and storms in the afternoon. Sunday’s highs will be near 90 degrees.
Monday will feature sun and clouds to start, with afternoon showers and storms developing along the sea breeze. Much of the activity will be along the Gulf coast and in the interior on Monday. Monday’s highs will be in the low 90s.
Tuesday’s forecast is more of the same — morning sun and clouds with afternoon showers and storms forming along the sea breezes. Highs on Tuesday will be in the low 90s.
In the central Pacific, powerful Hurricane Lane is causing dangerous flooding on the island of Hawaii, and much of the state of Hawaii is under a hurricane warning on Friday morning. At 5 am Friday, Lane had maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour and was 215 miles south of Honolulu. This is Hawaii’s worst hurricane disaster since 1992.
In the tropical Atlantic, we’re watching a wave just off the African coast. It has a low chance of developing during the next 5 days as it moves westward. It could find conditions more favorable in the central Atlantic — and it is the time of year that we pay close attention to waves emerging from Africa. So many of us remember one in August of 1992 — which became Hurricane Andrew. Today marks the 26th anniversary of that incredible category 5 hurricane.
