By EyesOnNews.com, Miami, Dec 1, 2014 – Remember when you were yelled at by mom, or as a parent you scolded your child, for drawing on the living room walls? Well, there are lots of kids who didn’t listen and have now turned wall drawing into a professional career. So, maybe you should have stayed with it, or be encouraging your child to continue to draw on the wall.
As part of Art Basel additional art work is being painted on the walls of the Wynwood Community. Here’s an idea of what you can see:
Established in 2009 as a “museum of the streets” by the late, legendary Tony Goldman with co-curator Jeffrey Deitch, Wynwood Walls has become an international phenomenon. Located on Wynwood’s NW 2nd Avenue, soon to be renamed Tony Goldman Way, the outdoor art museum, which features large scale murals by globally acclaimed street artists, reinvents itself annually with a program that surpasses what’s been done before and highlights artists whose work pushes the boundaries of imagination and creativity.
This year’s program will be no exception, as the Wynwood Walls presents The Art of Collaboration. The program looks to answer the question- what happens when two artists, each with their own unique style, come together to create something never before imagined but also celebrates the collaboration of art and community. In some cases, the artists have worked together before, in others, they have not even met. Additionally, street artist/activist Swoon, who while is not partnering with another artist, conveys collaboration within her work as she melds social advocacy and community seamlessly into her art. All have embraced the spirit of collaboration wholeheartedly; creating exceptional works that in many cases bring together divergent styles that showcase their talent and creativity in one combined work.
Jessica Goldman Srebnick, CEO of Goldman Properties having taken over the role of Chief Curator of the Wynwood Walls in 2012 from her father Tony Goldman, has embraced the role with great passion. “My father taught me to always push the creative envelope. Last year we introduced the Women on the Walls program with great success, this year it is about the Art of Collaboration. I believe that strong partnerships can encourage and inspire greatness. The growth of Wynwood into an international mecca for the arts is the result of great collaborations. Whether a mural, or a new neighborhood, we can all benefit from working together and bringing our BEST to the table, or in this case the WALL.”
Confirmed artists to date Include:
Cleon Peterson (Los Angeles) & Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles)
Pose (Chicago) & Revok (Riverside, CA)
Haas (Netherlands) & Hahn (Netherlands)
Dal East (China) & Cryptik (Los Angeles)
Faith 47 (South Africa) & Alexis Diaz (Puerto Rico)
Swoon and Case of ma’Claim crew will be creating new solo works in time for Art Basel, while longtime Wynwood Walls artist Kenny Scharf will be augmenting his existing wall.
In addition, Goldman Properties is partnering with Library Street Collective, a Detroit-based gallery that specializes in cutting edge modern and contemporary fine art with an emphasis on artists who have developed their skills and art in public places. Many of the artists they exhibit, such as How & Nosm, Maya Hayuk, Shepard Fairey, Vhils and Pose, currently have work on display at the Wynwood Walls.
“Public art is centrally important to the artists we work with, and it’s equally important to our gallery. The Wynwood Walls has remained at the forefront of this genre since its inception in 2009. We look forward to partnering with the Goldman family during Art Basel.” – Anthony Curis, partner at Library Street Collective
Library Street will open a pop-up gallery for Art Basel adjacent to the Wynwood Walls, in addition to working with the Goldman Properties/Wynwood Walls team of CEO Jessica Goldman Srebnick and Arts Manager Marité Iglesias to program an artist talk and an artist book & print signing fair.
