wishesMake-A-Wish Southern Florida recently held its “Walk for Wishes – Broward County” 5K Walk/Run fundraising event at Markham Park in Sunrise, with 1,800 participants raising more than $205,000 to grant wishes for 41 local children who have life-threatening medical conditions.

Former Miami Dolphins tight end Greg Baty, Brenda Baty, and Sherri Gutierrez led the “Purple Pigs” to a victory in the team fundraising category with nearly $83,000 in donations. Gutierrez, a member of the Make-A-Wish Southern Florida Board of Directors, was also the top individual fundraiser, generating more than $42,000 in contributions.

Make-A-Wish Southern Florida (www.sfla.wish.org) has granted nearly 11,000 wishes since 1983 to bring hope, strength, and joy to local children who have life-threatening medical conditions. Wish kids most often ‘wish to be’ (something), ‘wish to meet’ (someone), ‘wish to go’ (somewhere), or ‘wish to have’ (something) and the nonprofit organization makes this happen for the child and his/her entire family at no obligation.

The Southern Florida chapter grants a wish every 16 hours, at an average cost of $5,000 each, for children in 13 Florida counties and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
