South Florida’s big wigs, community leaders & elected officials join fundraiser in support of MCI
MIAMI (May 18, 2016) — Liberty City based Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI), a local nonprofit working to break the cycle of poverty by investing in each child and their families, will host its signature 4th annual “Over The Edge” fundraiser June 3- 4, 2016, to raise money and awareness and supporting programs for children from 3-18 years old residing in Liberty City. This thrilling event challenges supporters to rappel 19 stories (200 feet!) down the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, 255 Biscayne Blvd. Way, Miami, FL 33131.
Some of the notable 2016 Rapellers include: MDCPS Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Internationally celebrated soulstress Nicole Henry, Miami-Dade Commissioner Francis Suarez, President of The Children’s Trust James Haj, City of Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon and Commissioner Francis Suarez, Mayor of Key Biscayne Mayra Peña Lindsay along with Key Biscayne Chief of Police Charles R. Press, WPLG Reporter Constance Jones, Miami’s celebrated Caribbean chef to the stars Chef Irie, Kimmy B., co-host of the DJ Laz’ Morning Show, Jazz in the Gardens performers LaVie and April Raquel, along with more local community, civic and business leaders, elected officials, philanthropists, university presidents, members of the general public, and more.
In an act of love and bravery, one lucky couple was chosen to win an all-expense paid wedding “over the edge”. This year’s winning couple for “Wed over the Edge” is Vincent Scott and Suneliz Santana, a Liberty City based couple with four children. On June 4th, the couple will recite their vows on the 19th-floor pool deck of the JW Marriott Marquis Miami and rappel down 200 feet in celebration! Waiting at the bottom will be a free honeymoon night’s stay at the luxurious hotel and a complimentary cake and champagne toast.
“The tremendous success of this annual fundraiser is a clear message that the Miami community cares about making Liberty City a better place for its children and families,” said Cecilia Gutierrez, President and CEO of Miami Children’s Initiative. “We go “Over the Edge” because we are determined that the future of Liberty City’ children will not be defined by their zip code and because we believe that the children and families of Liberty City must have access to the best educational opportunities possible,” she continued.
All members of the community are invited to participate in “Over The Edge.” To rappel in support of MCI, participants create a personal fundraising page via miamichildrensinitiative.org and raise a minimum of $1,000 in donations. Participants must be at least 16 years old on the event date and not weigh more than 350 pounds. All proceeds benefit Miami Children’s Initiative.
